The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber

The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber – AD sent for review and giveaway

How would you like to come face to face with the future you?  Well while we were thinking about that, my nine-year old son and I decided to read The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber by Michael Seese and see how he’d cope with that very thing happening to him.

The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber

Published through Common Deer Press in June, The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber is a 143 page chapter book aimed at children aged 9-12 years of age, so perfect for upper Key Stage Two.

We meet twelve-year-old Julian who attends Whispering Falls Intermediate School, his school life is blighted by bully Biff Masterson.  But Julian has a secret weapon thanks to his inventor Dad, he has his eTab which is so much more than a normal tablet.  Mr Newcomber’s inventions never quite work in the way they’d been designed to, and the eTab is no different.  The eTab alters time and that’s where the fun begins.

There are all sorts of apps installed on the eTab for Julian to test out including the Virtual Volcano Diver but his favourite is Bother Bill which lets him take control of their neighbour’s satellite TV dish. His Dad had told him that the eTab would only work if he was within one hundred feet of his Dad at home.  Of course Julian had to see what would happen if he was a little further away.  The last thing he expected was for anything to actually happen.  One second he was on the pavement, the next he was sitting at the kitchen table with his Mum and had travelled in time, six minutes, as well as space!

From there we see Julian decide to travel into the future, but he gets more than he bargains for when a familiar 20-year-old man walks out of the bedroom wardrobe and tells him that he’s the future Julian, all grown up.  The two versions of Julian need to work together before the future is changed.

If, like my son, you have fans of Back to the Future in your house, then they will love The Extraordinary eTab of Julian Newcomber.  It’s kept him well entertained here.  I won’t ruin the rest of the plot for you, but it’s a good read that children will enjoy.
