I’ve been really lucky recently, that I’ve had the opportunity to read one-page turner after another. I recently finished reading The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda and it’s very good indeed. Published through Corvus in June, this is the author’s second novel and I haven’t been able to put it down.
The Last House Guest focusses on Avery Greer, a local girl from Littleport, Maine and her friendship with Sadie Loman who visits the town every summer with her wealthy family. The two young women really are from different sides of the track, but manage to form an alliance which endures over ten years.
The two are inseparable until Sadie dies one evening when she was meant to be at a party. Did she really kill herself?
The book moves from the time of Sadie’s death to a year on, as the small coastal town prepares for the memorial event in her honour. Avery is convinced that people blame her for Sadie’s death, and she isn’t convinced that Sadie would have killed herself either.
Avery has been working for the Loman family, managing their rental properties in the area and strange things seem to be happening. Disturbances are reported, candles are lit, but not by the people staying in the houses and then Avery discovers Sadie’s lost phone in the bottom of a blanket box.
There are secrets around every corner, along with prejudice, but Avery must uncover the truth, and clear her name in the process. Avery must face her past, which includes the death of both of her parents in a car crash some years before. She needs to uncover the truth behind the facade of each member of the Loman family and those in their social circle. She must question everything she’s believed in The Last House Guest as this thriller unfolds.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am happy to recommend it. I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below for your reference. I do earn from qualifying purchases.
