disclosure: we were sent the item for the purpose of review
I’m always keen to share other cultures with my ten-year-old son, and recently we were sent a copy of Uncle Gugi’s Wedding by U C Maduforo and her daughter (who was eleven at the time the book was written). The 81-page chapter book is aimed at children aged seven-twelve years of ages giving them an understanding of African culture.
In Uncle Gugi’s Wedding, we meet ten-year-old Kaycee who is set to travel from London to Nigeria for the wedding of her favourite uncle. The trip doesn’t have the best of starts when the family have to rush to the Nigerian embassy for some emergency travel certificates the night before their trip.
After a seven-hour flight, Kaycee arrives in Lagos with her mother and brother JC. It’s hot and it takes them ages to get through the various security checks before they can leave the airport and meet up with her grandparents. Whilst Kaycee is in Nigeria she will have the opportunity to brush up on the Igbo language her family speak and meet lots of her cousins. Her Mum tells her that she should call any family friends that they meet, who are older than her, Auntie or Uncle as a sign of respect. Much like we do, I reminded my own son.
We learn about the typical wedding preparations as well as traditional snacks eaten in the Igbo culture, how the snacks are offered to guests and by whom.
In Uncle Gugi’s Wedding, there’s a lesson to be learned at the end of each chapter and we follow every step of the celebrations. It’s an interesting book and my son and I have both learned from it. To my mind, it’s really important that we teach our children to celebrate differences and learn about other cultures and beliefs.
